Proverbs : 3

Welcome to the Wednesday Group.

We're now at week 3 in our 4 week series in the book of Proverbs.

In the book of Proverbs, integrity and honesty are often referred to directly and indirectly, and, as I've considered these, it seems that it would make a good sermon topic - but not today. Of course integrity is also mentioned elsewhere in the Bible. Integrity might be interpreted in different ways so it's great to have God and the Holy Spirit give us guidance and direct our judgement. Spend some time in quiet thought, inviting them to our time together this evening.

Session 3 - Integrity

Let's have a look at some of the references to integrity and honesty in the book of Proverbs. Grab your Bible, no linked verses today!

Read Proverbs 10:9, 11:3, 13:6, 14:5, 16:11.

Consider

Looking at these verses, what other words do we associate with integrity? Write them down.
Dictionaries gives two meanings of integrity. The first has to do with wholeness, completeness, being undivided (the derivation of the word integer). The second has a moral or ethical implication, being honest and fair.

As you think of these descriptions you might note that integrity is often linked to character, and understandably so. Foremost, it has to do with relationship. God asks that our relationship with Him is sound and that will then govern our relationship with others.

God asks that we lead pure lives, that we be discipled by the sinless Master, Jesus; in effect, to lead lives of integrity. Proverbs gives much guidance on this right through the book. Here are a few verses to consider.
Lives of integrity don't cheat - 16:11, are not devious - 21:8, do not take advantage - 22:22, are not dishonest - 14:5, are not hot headed - 14:17, show good character - 15:1, speak truthfully - 12:17&19.

Looking back at our definitions, you will note that those without integrity have differing standards. They treat one person one way, another person differently, serving their own interests. They are divided in their judgement, not whole. God asks the opposite, not to be swayed but to be pure and honest treating everyone the same. As someone has said, to show moral excellence, speak with truth, to be financially accountable, personally reliable and privately pure.

Prayer

  • Praise God for His Word. Give thanks for those who have been involved in your life, teaching and helping you to live a life of integrity.
  • Examine yourself and ask God to create in you a life of integrity.
  • Pray for those with whom you struggle in your relationship. Ask for healing.
"Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me."
