Proverbs : 2

Welcome to the Wednesday Group.

This is week 2 in a 4 week series from the book of Proverbs.

Today I've been challenged to be more aware of my relationship with the Holy Spirit. I believe I know why this should be, but it might be helpful, at the start of this session, to make ourselves available to God. Use this thought as the background while listening to this song. As you can see it's an unusual setting...

Song 'Holy Spirit'

Now that the song has finished spend some time in prayer

Session 2 - God's Words of Wisdom

Today, we'll spend some time thinking the wisdom of God

Read Proverbs 4

Consider
We may learn wisdom through a variety of means. We may read what someone has written about wisdom; this might include wise sayings (proverbs). We may experience situations in life where we learn what might be best, or not, for future occasions. We might discuss something with a friend or family and learn wisdom. We might even note something good, or bad, in someone else and learn from it accordingly.

Our verses today are presented as though they were instructions from father to a son, or a parent to a child. Look through the passage and note - maybe even read again, out loud - those verses which refer to listening to the father's words. I found about half a dozen or more. They convey the importance of reading and learning from the Bible and committing his words to our heart.

Wisdom learned by others can be so helpful to us and today we have so many ways available to us to learn God's words and wisdom. When it comes to most things, there is little that is not available on the internet. Fortunately, it is a great source for listening to messages and sermons about almost anything.

I enjoy reading the Bible and I miss the interaction of reading and talking about it with others. Let's not give up the opportunity of reading it and pray that it will not be long before we can get together again,

Over the next week think of a verse that you could commit to memory, using a new one each day.

Prayer

  • Praise God for His Word. Give thanks for those who have been involved in your life, teaching and helping your own understanding.
  • Ask God to develop your own wisdom from reading His Word.

I've tried to call round most of the group this afternoon to ask what you might like prayer for. Here are your replies...

  • Please pray for Dick and Lorna's grandson, Liam, who has had a motorcycle accident. He has hurt his back a little and broken his collar bone. He is recovering but the family would value our prayers.
  • Please give thanks for Briony's neighbour Glynis who, it was thought, had severe back problems. It would appear that it is not as bad as initially thought - more just a nerve issue, which will be monitored. Glynis is very relieved, as is her husband who is suffering for pancreatic cancer. Let's pray for healing for them both. Give thanks too, for the control and reduction of Karen's tumour, mentioned in a recent prayer email.
  • Give thanks for John and Mary's friend Allan, who has had his operation which went well and he is now back home. Pray for their neighbour Lucy, who is having regular chemo treatment for cancer.
  • Please pray for protection for Lorraine who is back at work. She is working with key-worker children which places her at more risk than usual. Please pray also, for her two girls as they start to socialise again with their friends. Pray for their protection and that they will be sensible and wise in their actions.
  • Steph asks that we remember those who are living on their own and feel lonely at this strange time. Thank God for the comforts that He brings.
  • Keren and Colin ask that we pray for Dave and Harry re their visas in the States. Pray for guidance for Sam, he's considering a project for Christian workers/conferences. Pray for the selling of Heywood House.
"Your word is a lamp for my feet,
    a light on my path."
